Nigerian national convicted after guilty plea for stabbing victim causing facial disfigurement, plus vehicle damage and breach of public order in St Paul's Bay.
Court of Magistrates (Malta) as a Court of Criminal Judicature · Magistrate Dr. Nadine Sant Lia B.A; LL.M (Kent); LL.D, Barrister at Law (England & Wales) · 8 May 2026
On the evening of 6 August 2023, between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, Stanley Ebende, a 27-year-old Nigerian national residing at an unknown address in Malta, attacked Desmond Sylvester on Triq Annetto Caruana in St Paul's Bay using a cutting and piercing instrument. The assault caused grievous bodily harm, specifically resulting in disfigurement to the victim's face and one of his hands, as certified by Dr. Simon Paul Micallef of Mater Dei Hospital. In the same incident, Ebende also caused damage to a Peugeot 208 vehicle (registration ADA045) belonging to Vladan Mihailovic, made threats and insults, and disturbed public peace through shouting, noise and fighting. He was arrested and charged on all four counts. During his initial examination on 8 August 2023, he pleaded not guilty to all charges. After approximately two and a half years of proceedings, on 13 January 2026, Ebende voluntarily entered an unconditional guilty plea to all charges. The court solemnly warned him of the legal consequences of his admission, granted him time to consult his defence lawyer, and confirmed he wished to maintain the plea. The court found no reason to doubt the genuineness of the admission and proceeded to sentencing. In determining the sentence, the court weighed several factors: Ebende's clean criminal record as at the date of arrest, his cooperation with police (including giving a statement without evasion), and the fact that the guilty plea — though entered at an advanced stage — was made before the court began evaluating evidence for a final verdict. The defence argued for six years, citing possible elements of self-defence from the victim's own testimony and requesting an anger management treatment order. The prosecution sought seven years. The court sentenced Ebende to six years' imprisonment, with time already served under preventive arrest to be deducted. It also issued a three-year Treatment Order for anger management, a three-year Restraining Order in favour of the victim effective from the date of release, ordered repayment of €1,144 to Vladan Mihailovic for vehicle damage, and ordered payment of €406.90 in expert witness costs to the Court Registrar within two years.
Stanley Ebende found guilty on his own unconditional admission on all four charges. Sentenced to 6 years' imprisonment (minus time served under preventive arrest). Three-year Treatment Order (anger management) issued under Article 412D of the Criminal Code. Three-year Restraining Order in favour of victim Desmond Sylvester, effective from date of release. Ordered to pay €1,144 in compensation to Vladan Mihailovic (vehicle damage) within 6 months. Ordered to pay €406.90 in expert witness costs to the Court Registrar within 2 years.
