Court of Magistrates (Malta) — Criminal · Magistrate Antoine Agius Bonnici · 30 March 2026
On 5 September 2025 at around 4:30pm in Triq Dawret Hal Ghaxaq, John Mizzi was driving a vehicle with no driving licence and no motor insurance when he caused a collision damaging vehicles belonging to four different people. He was charged with careless driving, reckless driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and four counts of causing damage to individual victims. At a hearing on 15 January 2026, Mizzi entered a guilty plea to all charges. The court confirmed he was properly warned of the consequences, given time to consult his lawyer, and that he confirmed his plea. The four individual damage charges were later withdrawn by the prosecution. The court took into account his early guilty plea and cooperation and honesty with police during the investigation as mitigating factors when fixing the penalty.
Guilty on 4 charges: careless driving, reckless driving, no licence, no insurance. Fine of €2,500 payable in monthly instalments within 1 year. Driving disqualified for 12 months. 3 penalty points imposed.
Traffic Regulation Ordinance Ch. 65 Art. 15 — careless and dangerous driving; Motor Vehicles Insurance Ordinance Ch. 104 Art. 3 — driving without insurance
