Court of Magistrates (Malta) — Criminal · Magistrate Antoine Agius Bonnici · 30 March 2026
On 15 July 2020 at around 9:25am in Triq San Albert, Gzira, Marica Stephanie Gatt was driving a van when she struck Anna Frendo, an elderly woman crossing the road. Anna Frendo suffered serious injuries including a broken leg and spent over two months in hospital. The court found that the road was in a busy residential area between two streets where pedestrians cross from any direction. Drivers in such areas must slow down and remain alert. There was no sudden emergency or unexpected obstacle that would have excused the driving. The evidence showed Gatt was not paying proper attention as required by the Highway Code and traffic regulations. The injuries were certified as serious by two doctors. The court convicted her on all charges, treating the lesser driving charges as absorbed into the dangerous driving conviction. She was fined and disqualified from driving for three months.
Guilty on all charges. Fine of €2,500. Driving licence disqualified for 3 months from the day after judgment.
